About 2 years ago I stumbled across ThePointsGuy.com when I was researching how to save money for an upcoming travel vacation.
Since then, I’ve used credit card points to fund the majority of my flights and accommodations to destinations such as London, Iceland, Nashville and still have plenty of points leftover for whatever life presents.
I’ve been so thrilled at incorporating this lifestyle into my routine, my friends have taken notice. In the past week, two aquaintances have texted me asking my secrets of using credit card points to book trips.
And there’s no secret!
I give them honest advice about which credit cards to begin with for first-time users, and the answer is always the same.
For a few reasons:
Excellent Sign Up Bonus
The current sign up bonus for this credit card includes 40,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 in the first 90 days. This is equivalent to $400 in free travel or gift cards. 2x miles on each purchase, 5% miles back when you redeem your miles, and your first year’s annual fee is waived.
Earn Points by Sharing Your Travel Stories
Sign up for the travel community, join the conversation and earn bonus miles! Every travel story you write earns you points, as well as every bonus you tip you give about a destination, and photo you upload. Currently the point system is as follows:
500 miles for registering for the community and completing a profile
150 miles for posting your travel story of at least 100 words
10 miles every time your story is ‘kudo’ed’ by another community member
10 miles for every travel detail or tip you include for a destination
Earn Extra Points by Shopping Online
RewardsBoost is a really neat feature by Barclaycard that allows you to earn bonus points by shopping through their online portal at many parter stores.
Above is a screenshot I took from my portal. For some stores, you can earn an addition 15 points per dollar spent! If you’re going to be online shopping anyway, you might as well be smart about it and earn extra miles.
Do you have the Barclaycard in your wallet? What do you think about it? Let me know in the comments!
